Graduated from Dongpyung Primary School, and entered Kumsung Middle School to study art. His mother took a good care of his art class preparations with her gracefulness throughout his school career, even providing him with an easel, commodity so rare at the time in Korea, specially requested to a carpenter.
When he was 14 years old (1952), he entered Dongnae High School. His special affection for art was recognized by art teacher, sending him to Indoo Ha (of Kyungnam Girl’s High School) and Youngkeun Choo (who was at the time running Chungmaek art studio) for further assistance and teaching.As he graduated from Dongnae High School, he remained in Busan for more of what he wanted rather than progressing to a university education as it struck him that university education was supposed to be in a conventional formula, not enough to satisfy his needs. During this period, he mainly spent time doing dessin, oil painting and silkscreen and such for almost 3 years before speaking to his friends visited him. Felt that he was revolving in obscurity, he changes his mind to go on to university and left for Seoul.
Artist History
1952년 부산 동평초등학교 졸업 후 부산 금성중학교에 입학한 그는 미술반에 들어가 그림공부를 했고 어머니의 지지는 늘 큰 뒷받침이었다. 아들 강국진과 그의 친구들 눈에 천사처럼 곱고 어진 분으로 비쳤던 어머니는 아들의 마음씨와 솜씨를 아끼고 격려하여, 당시로서는 갖기 힘든 이젤을 목수에게 맡겨서 만들어 주기도 했다.
그는 다시 예술의 길을 가는 그에게 격려를 아끼지 않던 스승을 만났다. 1955년 동래고등학교에 입학하자, 그림을 그리는 그의 마음가짐과 자질을 알고 있던 미술교사가 경남여고의 하인두 스승과 청맥화숙을 열고 있던 추영근 스승에게 보내 가르침을 받도록 해 주었던 것이다.
1958년 동래고등학교 졸업 후, 그는 대학에 들어가서 틀에 박힌 그림 공부를 하는 것보다는 나름대로 마음껏 그리겠다는 생각으로 부산에 남아 소묘, 유화, 실크스크린에 이르기까지 여러 매체를 다루어 보면서 3년을 지냈다. 그 기간은 그에게 예술에 대한 탐색의 시간이기도 했으나, 서울에서 대학에 다니던 친구들이 내려와서 이야기를 나누게 되면 자신이 지방에서 혼자 맴돌고 있다는 아쉬움을 느꼈던 그는 드디어 서울로 가기로 결심했다.
