His family was struck by financial hardship when father Kang passes away (1961) but he entered Hongik University to study fine art, where he worked with Chasub Kim and Hyunki Park until his sophomore year producing posters and ad boards to assist his own college career.
Adopting European and American art to learn more (1964), he became fascinated with European ‘Art Informel’ and Abstract Expressionism. Formed a group ‘noncol’ coterie with Inhwan Kim, Younghee Nam, Chulmo Yang, Chanseung Jung, Taeshin Choi, Myunghee Han and Youngsub Han, and rented a 2nd floor in noncol village of Hongje Dong, for painting activities.
Upon graduation from Hongik University (1965), Kang and his friends held a group exhibition ‘noncol’ in February at ‘Seoul Shinmun Hwaegwan’ (Seoul Press Hall). During this time they also published noncol Art-the country’s first art coterie magazine, proclaiming in the publication that “we slogan high the new formative norm that buck any compromise or conventionality”. He displayed 6 pieces under the name of Work, brushing of which was full of youth and passion.In 1966, his paintings exhibited for the 2nd ‘noncol’, as in the first exhibition, showed strong explosions of linear forms, only this time accompanied by more abridged lines and soft colors. The group exhibition ‘noncol’ was ended after its third exhibition in Busan. However, the resonance left by noncol echoed his willingness to participate in more diverse range of art forms such as 3-D, installation, happenings and performances, shifting towards more variety.

부친이 작고한 뒤, 집안 형편이 어려워진 상황에서 그는 1961년 홍익대학교 서양화과에 입학했다. 배고픔을 달래면서 학업을 계속하던 그는 부산에서 공부한 실력을 바탕으로 1-2년 동안 김차섭, 박현기와 더불어 포스터, 광고판 따위를 제작해서 학비를 벌어야만 했다. 그리고 대학 졸업반이던 1964년경에는 앵포르멜 미술과 추상회화 등 유럽과 미국의 새로운 미술의 특성을 적극적으로 공부하면서 회화 작업에 다시 몰두하기 시작했다. 그 무렵, 홍익대학교 미술대학 동기 동창인 김인환, 남영희, 양철모, 정찬승, 최태신, 한명희, 한영섭과 함께 홍제동 논꼴 마을의 외딴 2층집을 빌려 함께 집단 스튜디오로 사용하면서 ‘논꼴’ 동인을 만들게 된다.
1965년 홍익대학교 미술대학을 졸업하던 해, 2월에 강국진은 집단 스튜디오에서 함께 작업하던 친구들과 서울 신문회관에서 제 1회 ‘논꼴’ 동인전을 열었다. 그는 <작품>이라는 제목의 추상회화들 6점을 출품했으며, 모두 젊은 열기로 가득 찬 힘찬 붓 터치와 구성이 돋보였다. 당시에 ‘논꼴’ 멤버들이 펴낸 한국 최초의 동인지 『논꼴 아트』에는 "일체의 타협의 형식을 벗어나는 시점에서 우리는 늘 자유로운 조형의 기치를 올린다"라고 밝히고 있다. 그들은 다음 해인 1966년, 서울 신문회관에서 제2회전을 연 뒤, 부산에서의 제3회전을 끝으로 ‘논꼴’을 해산했다. 회화를 전공했던 강국진의 경우, ‘논꼴’의 해산은 이제 추상회화에 몰두하던 시기를 벗어나 입체와 설치, 그리고 해프닝과 퍼포먼스의 영역으로 작업을 확산하게 되는 계기였다.
