His first Solo Exhibition entitled Interrelation of Forms was held at Myungdong gallery. In his exhibits, he brought various physical developments into relief thought the objects that were structured by fabrics, ropes, cardboards, and Korean paper.

‘Independant Exhibition’ was held at National Museum of the Contemporary Art, Korea. He exhibited a block whose top was surrounded by cloth and was tied by ropes. Its sized was 250x250x40cm. In 1991 it was remade by Kang.

His mother passes away on May 17th.

He opens the country’s first print art class in Hapjungdong, for which he sought printing tools and materials with Kulim Kim and Chanseung Jung. He also made his own pressing machine and invited Sangyoo Kim, Sanguk Lee to teach together, contributing enormously to educating people.

1968

June: Transparent balloon and nude, Playing Korean Cards was performed as a happening work at ‘C’est si bon’ music appreciation chamber, in Seoul

October: Kang both organized and participated in Murder at Han riverside performance for which Kang himself as well as Kangja Jung and Chanseung Jung not only expressed their criticism of the established civilization and reality, but also linked them that cannot be incorporated in painting. The performance was done under the First Bridge of River Han. Kang also provided a workplace called “Space Designer” with Jongmu Park in Myungdong where they also ran café, the interior design of it and shop windows for 4 years. The place was later moved to Hapjungdong.

1967

Involved in a new coterie group called “Shin Jun” consisting of Kukjin Kang himself, Inhwan Kim, Chanseung Jung, Sunhee Shim, Duksoo Yang and Kangja Jung.

Participated in ‘Chungnyun jakka yeunlipjun’ (Exhibition of young artist’s union) with group ‘Mu’ (art society of 63rd graduates from Hongik University consisting of Youngja Kim, Bokchul Mun, Taehyun Lee, Boonghyun Choi, Dan Lim (or Myungjin Lim) and Iksang Jin) and group ‘Origin’ Coterie (art society of 64th from Hongik, consisting of Sooik Kim, Seungwon Seo, Kiok Shin, Sangrak Lee, Seungjo Lee, Changhong Choi, Jongsub Ham etc.)

The seminar for the particular exhibition was carried out by Il Lee, Hoon Kim and Myungjin Lim under the title “Trend and movement after the world of Abstract art”, and happening performance under Happening with vinyl umbrella and candle light.

Kukjin Kang’s installation featured a glass bottle and a glass stacked up, and putting dyestuff and making it move up and down in-between two layers of vinyl. This work of Kang was later revisited and revived in 1991.

1966

The 2nd Nonggol Coterie Exhibition held at ‘Seoul Shinmun Hwaegwan’ (Seoul Press Hall).

His paintings, as in the first exhibition, strong explosions of linear forms, only this time accompanied by more abridged lines and soft colors.

The Coterie Exhibitions came to an end after its third exhibition in Busan.

Graduated from university

Held ‘Nonggol’ Coterie Exhibition in February at ‘Seoul Shinmun Hwaegwan’ (Seoul Press Hall).

During this time he also published Nonggol Art – a synthesis of articles and catalogue essays from coterie magazine and founding exhibition, respectively. They argue in the publication that “[we] slogan high the new formative norm that buck any compromise or conventionality”, exhibiting 6 pieces of art under the name of Work.

1964

Adopted European and American art to learn more.

Become fascinated with Informel and Abstract Expressionism.

Formed “Nonggol coterie” with Inhwan Kim, Younghee Nam, Chulmo Yang, Chanseung Jung, Taeshin Choi, Myunghee Han and Youngsub Han, and rented a 2nd floor in Nonggol Maeul, Hongjedong, for painting activities.

Became poorly off as father Kang passes away.

Entered Hongik University to study fine art.

Worked with Chasub Kim and Hyunki Park to produce posters and ad boards to assist his own college career.

1958

Graduated from Donglae High School.

He remained in Busan to do more of what he wanted rather than progressing to a university education as it strongly struck him that university education was supposed to be manneristic. During this period, he mainly spent time doing dessin, oil painting and silkscreen and such for almost 3 years before speaking to his friends visited him. Felt that he was revolving in obscurity, he changes his mind to go on to university and left for Seoul.

1955

Entered Donglae High School after graduation.

His special affection for art was recognized by art teacher, sending him to Indoo Ha (of Kyungnam Girl’s High School) and Youngkeun Choo (who was at the time running Chongmaek Gallery) for further assistance and teaching.

Graduated from Dongpyung Primary School, and entered Gumsung Middle School.

His mother took a good care of his art class preparations with her amazing grace throughout his school career, even providing him with an easel, commodity so rare at the time in Korea, specially requested to a carpenter.

1948

Transferred to Dongpyung Primary School nearer from home at Kayaree. Toiled for academic desire, studying in a small factory used by the Japanese and building a temporary schoolhouse until soldiers and refugees retreating to the south occupied the scene via the outbreak of Korean War, leaving him no choice but to study outside under shades in Summer and under self-made tent when raining or snowing.

His household was overall well-off compared to others, thanks to his father’s successful Hwansin Cloth Company and distribution agency of tobacco, salt and flour and his mother taking good care of domestic duties. Kukjin represented his school in the national art competition.

1946

Enrolled in Sungji Primary School, located in Seomeon, Jingu

Moved to Busan with family, a major southern coastal city of Korea, as his father retired from National Monopoly Bureau.
