형의 상관

 1973, 한지, 하드보드, 제1회 개인전, 명동화랑(1973.9.27-10.1)

 

1973년 강국진은 ‘형의 상관’이라는 주제로 첫 개인전 (1973.9.27-10.1)을 명동화랑에서 열었다. 하드보드가 벽에 걸려있다면 그것은 그림이 그려지기 위한 ‘평면’이라고 느껴지지는 것이 상식이다. 그러나 1973년 그의 개인전 전시장 벽에서 발견되는 하드보드에는 길게 자른 흰색의 한지가 4장 붙여지고 그 위에 다시 반투명한 느낌의 한지 한 장을 풀로 붙여져 있는 ‘사물’로 인식된다. 그 ‘돌출성’ 때문에 그림자가 드리워져 그 ‘사물성’(objecthood)은 더욱 강화된다. 평면적 회화에 대한 전통적인 개념을 뛰어넘는 실험적 작업 중 하나이다. Interrelation of Forms

In 1973, Kukjin Kang held his first personal exhibition ‘Interrelation of Forms’ (27 September-1st October) to ponder upon the relations of multifarious materials within a certain spatial realm. Regarding a hardboard on the wall, it is too easy to fall in thinking that the purpose of such thing is for drawing in the sense of 2-D. But the same hardboard could be observed from different perspective at Kang’s solo exhibition in 1973 in that it just has 4 almost half-transparent Korea papers, compressed for ruggedness, glued on the wall, consequently by which Kang creates 3-D-like objects with the effects of shadow.. The concept of ‘flatness’ and ‘3-D’ has just become more difficult to distinguish because of the formative relationship formed by Kang’s shift in conventional and habitual cognization of things.
